Fiberglass (outside)

The next step on the canoe is to fiberglass the outside.  Fiberglass is a material made of fine particles of glass combined with yarn and woven into a cloth-like material.  The fiberglass is used to waterproof the canoe and make it very very strong.  You’ll see below in the pictures that the fiberglass mat is not clear.  Once the epoxy hardener is poured over the mat the fiberglass becomes almost invisible.

The whole process to fiberglass the outside of the canoe consisted on one 6 ouch mat and 5 light coats of epoxy.

The white cloth is the fiberglass matting and I'm applying the epoxy on the top. Notice how the wood is starting to appear as the mat absorbs the epoxy.

Everypart of the canoe was encased in fiberglass to insure that it would be waterproof.

The outside mold is complete. We turned the canoe right side up to allow us to work on the inside. Sanding and fiberglassing is next.
